Isaac's 12th Month

It's hard to believe that Isaac is already a year old! Crazy. Here's a few snip-its of the past month.

He is crawling fast and furious, pulling up and walking along furniture starting to release his hands and stand alone for a few seconds. He is still a bit away from taking his first steps in my opinion. We'll see. But he can climb up the stairs and will turn around to scootch himself down them as well!

I don't know that I've ever mentioned this, but Isaac has a lovie!! We never had anything like this for Kayla (something to help her fall asleep at naps/night) but we also had a lot of nap issues with her, so much so that I would often rock her to sleep. Since I don't really have the time to do that with Isaac, since he is not my only, I wanted to give him a "transitional item" to help comfort him. We got an adorable frog lovie from our church with his name on it, and I started giving this to him around 6 months. He has grown completely attached to it, and he hugs it the entire time he is in his crib. Even though he travels quite a bit during his sleep, his lovie is always in tow.

He has 12 teeth now ( 4 in front on top and bottom and his 4 molars).

Solids continue to be a challenge. He will not eat any fruit or meat unless it is pureed. He will eat a select few vegetables (carrots, sweet potatoes and peas) in bite size form, sometimes. But otherwise, his preference is pureed. He loves yogurt, but will spit out pieces of fruit! I'm at a loss of what to try with him! I always try to give him a small bite of what we are eating, but he pushes it out with his tongue or throws it on the floor. Eventually I know he will learn, so we do keep trying. In the meantime, it's a bit frustrating! We are still nursing 4x a day, and I probably won't start to wean him until he is a bit more diverse in his eating.

His personality is still rather laid back and sweet. As he has grown he's gotten a little bit of a stubborn streak and is starting to get more motivated. If he wants something and he can't have it (because we won't give it to him, or because Kayla won't let him have it) he whines and cries and tries to throw a temper tantrum! This will not be cute in a few months, but it's pretty cute right now! He will also go limp when he gets angry!

He’s a very curious little boy and loves the vacuum cleaner! Here is David showing him how it sucks! Isaac will chase it around the house!

He loves his big sister so very much. Sometimes they play together and share; I love those moments! Most of the time, however, I’m a referee!

His sleeping habits continue to be about the same; he sleeps 11 hours straight at night and takes 2 naps, typically 2-3 hours total.

He's a bit of a momma's boy and loves to be with me and in my arms as often as possible.

He’s a skinny little thing. We didn’t have a 12 month appointment, but since I’m behind on blogging, I did take him in at 13 months and he was 20lbs exactly! That puts him in the 5-10%! Peanut!!!

He is a precious little boy, has a great smile and a strong hug. We love him so very much and feel so blessed to have him as our son.

Isaac's Birthday Weekend Celebrations

Mom and Dad Taylor came in town for the weekend of Isaac's birthday and what a fun time we had with them in town! We no longer have a spare queen bed in our house, so they opted to stay in a hotel rather than use blow-up beds. The first hotel they stayed at had an awesome breakfast buffet and a pool and hot tub! We went there each morning for the food and played in the pool too! On Friday after we went to downtown GR and there was a local art show where artist made a mini-golf course. It was really creative and we had a lot of fun playing!

That night David and I got to go out of a date and joined some friends downtown for dinner. It was fun to eat and converse kid free and spend some time with friends and then alone too. The Taylors had Kayla overnight for a sleepover that night too (or should I say a chat-over; Kayla told stories until past midnight and was up at 7!)

Saturday included more swimming, shopping and eating out! We got 2 birthday sundaes since we were celebrating both Isaac and Mom Taylor's birthdays. Isaac was very skeptical of it at first, but soon climbed out of his chair to get more!

Then the Taylors switched to a different hotel, one that had a water park!! After church on Sunday we got pizzas to eat poolside and we played all afternoon! There was a waterslide which Kayla went down with us about 100 times - she loved it! We took Isaac down it a few times too!

We opened some birthday presents and we Skyped my parents to sing happy birthday to Isaac and eat some cake (a cake that Kayla helped me make and decorate!). Isaac did not like the cake at all; in fact, he spit it out! He did enjoy playing with the cup of milk and straw we gave him, though.

On Monday both Grandma and Pop-pop took Kayla to preschool. She enjoyed showing them all the things she likes to do there and introducing them to some of her friends! The Taylor's took off after preschool time to start back on their trip home.

Since the cake wasn't very successful we opted to make chocolate chip cookies for Isaac's birthday dessert. He enjoyed that quite a bit!

Of course, I also took a million pictures of him in his birthday shirt, hoping to get a few that came out well! Here is one of my favorites!

We had a great time with the Taylor's in town and had fun celebrating Isaac's birthday!

One Year Later

Dear Isaac,
As I sit here today snuggling with you on your first birthday, I find myself involuntarily crying tears of joy. I feel so grateful, so blessed to be your mother. You are a pure joy to watch. Your sweet smile and great hugs melt my heart. I fell in love with you immediately; the moment you were born my heart swelled with an amazing love for you, my son. Today this love continues to grow as you grow. I love learning more about you and who you are. I love that I get to be your mother and can teach you and help shape who you are to become.

This past year hasn't been easy. In some ways, having a baby the second time around was easier than the first time around since I kind of knew what to expect. But the fact that I had a baby and a toddler was what was really hard. Not double the work, but more work. Yet more than double the joy. The love and affection you and your sister share is amazing to watch. I've joked that I hope she lets you make it to your first birthday (it's no secret that she has no concept of the word "gentle"). But here you are, already one, and what a fabulous relationship you guys have (you know, minus the fact that she pushes you down and steals your toys!!). The love you guys share is something I love to watch.

You are so precious to me, baby boy. I can't wait to see the little man you are becoming more and more each day.

Happy 1st Birthday, Isaac!

love,
Momma

SICK

We have had our fair share of sickness this year. I knew it would happen since Kayla is in preschool now in addition to nursery at church, my Bible study childcare, the Y childcare, plus seeing friends on play dates. Kayla has been pretty healthy most of her life, only having an occasional runny nose and ear infection. But right before Christmas both she and I got a stomach bug that lasted about 24 hours. Then in February, Kayla and I again got sick (the flu). We both had fevers, chills, head colds, runny noses, coughs. It was miserable and it lasted nearly 2 weeks. Then Kayla's turned into fluid in her ears, an ear infection, and impetigo (a rash) on her chin. After 1 round of antibiotics those symptoms were gone. Funny enough, at preschool they did a hearing test during the time when she had fluid in her ears and she failed the test! She had passed a previous one they gave a month before, so there was no cause for concern, but it let me know that there really was a problem!!

Then, just this past week, she got another virus. She was puking and pathetic for 4 days. She couldn't keep anything down, hardly even water. It was horrible to watch. She would beg for food or for something to drink when she would only puke it minutes later, and was so lethargic it was all she could do to sit up. Sometimes she wanted me to read her a book, but was too tired to look at the pages! Poor girl. She was really good at making it in the puke bucket and calling us in the middle of the night to help. Only 1 time did she call and we didn't make it on time and it resulted in a bedding and outfit change in the middle of the night. She was a trooper, but it sure was hard to watch.

Isaac has remained healthier than the rest of us. He had a bad cough during Christmas which lasted nearly a month. And he's had his fair share of runny noses this winter. And I can tell he's been "off" here and there, because he'll act clingy, his forehead is burning hot, and he refuses to eat almost all solids. Some of that might be teething pains, since he just busted through his molars, which I know is painful. But thankfully he hasn't gotten the vomiting thing Kayla has been dealing with.

We are looking forward to spring and less sick germs around here!!

My 31st Birthday!

In the past year I have:
- birthed a beautiful baby boy
- lost 50 pounds (the 50 that I gained in pregnancy)
- potty trained a toddler
- trained for and ran my first 5k
- held down the fort while David recovered from knee surgery
- made 2 very long road trips with 2 little kids and had a BLAST the whole time
- worked hard to de-clutter and reorganize our house
- started consistently wearing some form of makeup (eye makeup mostly)
- opened my heart up to God's plan for our lives and done my best to listen for His voice

I'm excited for what God has in store for my life this next year!
