Boone

We got a chance to visit Boone, NC this fall and see Appilatian State, where Brian goes to college. Every year his family goes up there for a weekend, and each year we say how much fun it would be if we could join them. It was kinda fun to be able to actually join them this year!

On Saturday we tailgated for lunch and was really both David and my first opporunity to do tailgate, since Calvin didn't have a football team. Then we went to the game. The kids enjoyed the atmosphere for a little bit, but by 5 minutes into the game they were ready for something else! Everyone took turns entertaining them and we made it until half time, at which point we decided to head home!

The next day Brian took us on a tour of his campus, which was beautiful. The weather for the weekend was perfect, despite a little rain, and we really enjoyed our visit!

Here are a few pictures from the weekend.

Marble's Children's Museum

For Kayla's birthday the Taylor's got us a membership to the Children's Museum! We have been there several times and we really like it! It is much bigger than the one in Grand Rapids and in some ways I miss the familiarity. However, after going there several times we have become more familiar with things and are starting to get more into a routine of how we go through the museum and I like it more and more. One thing that is hard to get used to is that it is so big that I can't be with both kids at the same time. So, I have to stick with Isaac and let Kayla play on her own. The different areas are sectioned off well, so it would not be easy for her to run off. And each time we go I have a serious talk with Kayla about staying near me and coming in to check on me frequently. So far she has done a great job with that! Here are some pictures from our various trips!

The New "Life As We Know It"

Well, I've pretty much neglected blogging all summer long. We've been busy, you know, moving across the country, trying to settle in, house hunting, vacationing, gestating another baby, etc. So, yeah. I keep saying I'm going to post a whole bunch of old posts.... and I will. I have tons ready to go, but I haven't had time to look through our massive stash of pictures and add them to the posts, so I continue to hold off on posting it. But I do want to get back on track. I miss having this writing outlet. I don't want to forget these memories and I want to be able to share what's going on with friends and family. So, I'm going to try to get back on track. We'll see how successful I am, though!!

The last 2 weeks have been a whirl-wind. We closed on our new house and Kayla started preschool. That pretty much totally changed things. We moved our stuff during the week last week and spent our first night in the house on Saturday. Many, many thanks to my dad (who flew out on Wed to help us move), my in-laws and my SIL Laura who helped us clean, load up things from the Taylor's, unload things from cars/pods/etc, watch the kids, etc. We are thrilled to be living here finally! We've dreamed of having a new house for many many months and it's fun to have it be reality. I will (ideally) shortly do a post on our new home and put pictures online for you all to see! But, we are loving it!

Kayla is loving her preschool. She is excited about it every day. She is so funny when I drop her off, she hides behind my back as though she is shy! My child, SHY!! Hahahaha! But then she'll give me a hug and kiss and run in! She always comes out with a smile and tells me about all the fun she had. I really like her 2 teachers, they are both really sweet. It is a much bigger program this year than what she had last year, and I am still adjusting to the changes. I really loved her preschool last year and am thankful she had that experience. It has made the transition this year really easy. I haven't heard any disciplinary reports yet, and that is an improvement over last year! Her class has 14 kids in it, and they seem nice and the parents seem nice too. I hope to develop some friendships for both Kayla and I from her class, in time. She has been CRAVING friends. She is such a social child, and most of the summer she went without seeing kids her age. She would see them at church on Sunday's, but we were here and there and everywhere, so it was not consistent and she was not actually making friends during any of this. I missed having play dates with friends and getting together with both my friends and her friends. That has been a little tough for us both. I am praying that we will start to meet people and make friends.

In my last post I was really down and out and was hoping we'd find a house soon so I could feel like I could start to settle in and make some roots here in NC. It was such a relief when we picked out our house. I got the last spot in her preschool program (and so many others were completely full), we started to attend a local church, I got registered for a MOPS program, I found a pediatrician and dentist for the kids and have appointments for them scheduled, and have now started to meet a few of the neighbors. It feels good to have these details taken care of. I still feel like I'm a ways off from making friends, but at least I'm starting to meet people. It is such a blessing to start to feel like I'm in some kind of rhythm. I've been feeling completely out of sync all summer long. So, I'm doing so much better these days! :)

There is still a long ways to go in our transition to living down in NC. But, we are enjoying the process, and enjoying discovering how "life as we know it" really is. God is certainly moving in our lives and we are excited for what the future has in store for our family.

Charlotte Vacation(s)

We made 2 trips to Charlotte this summer to visit Steph and Nick. This first time it was just our family, and the second time was for Labor Day and the Taylor's and Brian came also. Each time we spent some time out on their boat and used the jet skis! We all had a blast! Both of the kids loved the boat - they liked to help Uncle Nick drive it and Kayla liked to just sit and watch too. Kayla enjoyed the jet skis the first trip, but on the second trip she was out with David and Brian and they tipped over and that scared her enough that she did not want to go out again! Isaac, however, LOVED the jet skis! He could not get enough of it!

It is fun being close to family. We really enjoyed getting to see Steph and Nick several times this summer and feel blessed to live near them so we are able to do things like this more often!
